Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day – Thursday, April 27, 2017
AUMA-USA hosted 16 children, ages 6 – 17 years old, for Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, on Thursday, April 27, 2017. This year’s theme was “Count on Me!”  Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day teaches young girls and boys the responsibilities their parent or mentor takes on during the workday.  Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day emphasizes the importance of education and the opportunity to learn about trade occupations available for students who do not wish to obtain a four-year-post-secondary schooling degree. Furthermore, this event teaches children about a balanced work and family life. Through interactive activities, the children learned AUMA-USA’s business practices as well as how each department plays a role in its success.

Upon arrival, parents enjoyed breakfast with their children before going about their daily routine. The group played an icebreaker game that involved throwing a beach ball to one another and answering whatever questions his or her thumb landed on. This was a fun way to learn about each other. Once everyone became more comfortable with their new friends, the children decorated AUMA t-shirts that they wore throughout the day and were able take home as a remembrance of their time at AUMA-USA.

Marketing and Business Development Manager, Justin Ledger, spoke to the kids about AUMA-USA and its department's tasks. The children, then chose a partner, traced one another, and dressed themselves as professionals; some were real estate agents, millionaires, video game developers and veterinarians. Each child shared their drawing and discussed what he or she wanted to be when they grew up.

Rory Bennett, Production Controls Supervisor and Tony Scacchitti, Production Manager divided the children into two groups for a plant tour. While on the tour, the children were able to see the different components of an actuator and how one is assembled. Moreover, the girls and boys learned about manufacturing and career opportunities available in fields such as production, planning, operations, machining, electrical component assembly, testing and service.

After a busy morning, parents rejoined us for lunch, which consisted of a taco bar followed by ice cream sundaes. The children were all smiles while adding their favorite toppings to their ice cream. Once everyone had enough to eat, Brandon Riggle, Safety Chairman/AC Assembler, spoke to the group about sun safety. With summer right around the corner, Brandon acknowledged the importance of staying hydrated, wearing hats and sunscreen. After learning about sun safety, the group made their own sun visors jazzed up with foam stickers and markers.

Engineering taught the children about electromagnetic fields. Each child received copper, batteries and magnets. The children had to coil the copper and get their batteries to travel through with the help of magnets. This was a hit amongst the group. Barbara Craycroft and Jannell Rance from Order Entry and Applications led a ‘What is sales?’ activity. Each group received a different kind of potato chip to market. The teams were very creative and did a nice job creating logos, slogans, pricing and mascots to aid in their sales pitch.

Thank you to the parents, children and staff who participated in this year’s Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day! It was a great day; jam packed with activities that focused on the importance of working as a team or as individuals to accomplish a task or goal. Although the day was filled with fun, laughter and many sweet treats, it was also educational. AUMA is grateful for the chance to make a positive impact on our kids' future and looks forward to Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day 2018.
