Kansas City Power and Light updates actuators for air quality and emissions compliance |
Kansas City Power & Light’s (KCP&L) La Cygne Power Plant is a coal-fired plant located in Kansas City, MO. The La Cygne facility needed to replace actuators that were on 18 Cyclone Dampers in order to make the necessary improvements to meet federal and state regulations for air quality and emissions.
AUMA-USA was awarded this opportunity because AUMA-USA was able to overcome the many underlying challenges in conjunction with this project, one of them being the high temperature. As a result of the high temperatures within the power plant, AUMA-USA had to ensure that the wires within the actuator would not melt or short. Therefore, the actuator was remote mounted to the wall. With the controls mounted 15 ft. from the boiler wall and the control wires protected by the heat shrinkable tubing, the risk of the wires melting or shorting were now minimal.
Moreover, AUMA-USA also provided KCP&L a solution that would allow all of its dampers to open in one direction, clockwise (CW) to close. Since AUMA-USA’s actuators are easily configured, some actuators were mounted upside down. The sole purpose of this was to assure that all handwheels operated clockwise to close, regardless of the damper closing direction. |
